Beginning Blacksmithing Classes

HI ALL!  It’s been an…interesting…three months as I recover from open heart surgery! I’m functioning pretty well, and am beginning to take students again. Thank you all for your support, patience, and interest.

I’m beginning by limiting classes to only two students, and taking students on a ‘first come, first served’ basis, rather than putting up a schedule. If you want a class, please contact me and we’ll set a mutually convenient time to hold it. My plan is to resume scheduled classes around the end of the year.

I’m looking forward to hearing from you!

Kirk

ALL CLASSES ARE (currently) LIMITED TO 2 STUDENTS, SO YOU GET PERSONAL ATTENTION THROUGHOUT THE CLASS!

Beginning Blacksmithing classes are designed to give you basic instruction on correct hammer control, basic fire maintenance, and the most commonly used blacksmithing processes; drawing a taper, bending, and twisting. Anyone with reasonable eye/hand coordination can handle this without prerequisite knowledge.

Class fee: $200, which includes all materials. Lunch is not included. Lunch options include brown-bagging, and there are several restaurant options close by.

Basic Bladesmithing also focuses on hammer control and fire maintenance, as well as an overview of heat treatment. There is greater precision involved in making a good knife, and you will do better in this class if you already have some hammer control, and a little practice under your belt.

Being a complete newbie won’t stop you from understanding the class material, or creating a functional knife. But it’s harder for a beginner with no experience to forge a blade that is smooth enough not to require extensive grinding to finish. If you can routinely drive a nail without making hammer marks in the wood you drive the nail into, you should be fine in this class.

Class fee: $200, which includes all materials. Lunch is not included. Lunch options include brown-bagging, and there are several restaurant options close by.

Don’t see a date that works for you?  Looking for a weekday class?  Please contact us about customized scheduling.
