An Introduction to Blacksmithing

Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have about this class:

9 + 1 =

One day beginner’s class for those who have never hit hot metal before. You’ll learn about shop safety, how to build and maintain a forge fire, basic metallurgy, and fundamental blacksmithing processes. You will learn to taper, scroll, and twist metal to make a basic set of tools to manage the fire in your own shop. If you come just to get a taste of blacksmithing, you’ll use the same skills to make decorative ‘S’ hooks or a simple bottle opener. Please pack a lunch, or plan to visit the Subway, which is a short drive from the shop.

Basic Bladesmithing

Basic Bladesmithing

Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have about this class:

13 + 6 =

This class focuses on hammer control and fire maintenance, as well as an overview of heat treatment. There is great precision involved in making a good knife, and you will do better in this class if you already have some hammer control, and a little practice under your belt. This said, being a complete newbie won’t stop you from understanding the class material, or creating a functional knife. But it’s harder for a beginner with no experience to forge a blade that is smooth enough not to require extensive grinding to finish. If you can routinely drive a nail without making hammer marks in the wood you drive the nail into, you should be fine in this class.

Forging an Octopus

Forging an Octopus

Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have about this class:

11 + 13 =

An octopus needs to look dynamic. It needs to look like it is going somewhere, or like it just stopped on purpose. It really won’t look right if the legs are all just randomly wiggly. People looking at it might not be able to articulate what they see wrong about it, but they’ll see it. Throughout this process look at lots of photos and videos of octopuses to understand how and why they move! In the end, that is what will really make a good octopus!
